Whitby Holiday Books

posted by Dracula

Following on from my last post, have you discovered the Dracula-in-Whitby.com Guide to Whitby yet? It’s a great read and is available as a PDF instant download. The pictures of the town and surrounding areas have been specially commissioned and are unique to us.

If you would prefer something more ‘hardcopy’ to take with you on your Whitby holiday (a Whitby book with a spine!), maybe these Amazon books can whet your appetite (use the search function if nothing grabs your interest).

Hope you find something suitable… if not, drop me (Alan) an email and I’ll help you find the perfect Whitby book!

Why You Must Visit Whitby This Summer

posted by Dracula

I’ve just read a  very entertaining account of Whitby written by Helen Buhaenko in The Independent.

The article, ‘Coast Watch: Tracing the footsteps of Dinosaurs and Dracula in Whitby‘ seems to capture the essence of Whitby and is a great summary of all the things you can do in the area, whatever your age.

Here’s the lowdown on what Helen discovered on her visit:

  • Saltwick Bay
  • Staithes
  • Robin Hood’s Bay
  • Whitby Museum (and it’s infamous preserved severed hand!)
  • Fossils
  • Caedmon and one of the earliest examples of English poetry
  • Dracula and Bram Stoker
  • The Walrus and the Carpenter (Lewis Carroll)
  • Crabbing
  • Smugglers

And… this is just the tip of the iceberg.  Helen doesn’t get into the Goth Festivals, the imposing Abbey or the 199 Steps!

I guess I take it all for granted (a mistake, I know), but if you haven’t been to Whitby before, NOW is the time to come if you possibly can.

To find out more about a Whitby holiday, where to stay, what to do and to see some great pictures of the area, visit the Dracula-in-Whitby.com website.

If you are visiting, then you might like to arm yourself with a little knowledge about the area.

Guess what?  Dracula-in-Whitby.com has one!  Spooky, eh?

Here’s the link: Guide To Whitby: ‘Things to See and Do in Whitby Before You Die‘ (I can hear you all now thinking, “What a snappy title!”.  Maybe not ;-) ).

Have fun this Summer wherever you go.

Last year, McFarland’s published a facsimile edition of Stoker’s Notes (transcribed and annotated by Robert Eighteen-Bisang and Dr. Elizabeth Miller).  This volume gave the public the chance to view all 124 pages of Bram Stoker’s working Notes for Dracula.  The original notes were auctioned at Sotheby’s in 1913 and are now housed in the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia.

Dr. Elizabeth Miller is a widely published authority on Dracula and she will be visiting the UK at the end of April.  She will be lecturing at the National Library of Ireland on April 28th and will also be making a visit to Whitby (hope it lives up to her expectations!).

Dr. Miller (who is a Dracula Society member, although she lives in Toronto) will also be speaking to the society in London at the beginning of May.

Should be quite an enlightening meeting and, as usual, I can’t get to London to attend.  Maybe I’ll bump into her in Whitby as she counts the 199 Steps ;-)

Dracula in Pakistan: Zinda Laash

posted by Dracula

I’ve just been reading about an obscure Pakistani Dracula film called, ‘Zinda Laash‘, a rather unique interpretation of the classic 1958 Hammer film, ‘Dracula‘.

Basically, it seems like some mad professor discovers the secret of immortality (there’s a catch – as an undead vampire!).  His assistant becomes his victim, lots of running around, inappropriate music for the soundtrack (except the music nicked from James Bernard’s great score) and exotic dance numbers.

Apparently, when ‘Zinda Laash‘ was first shown (in 1967) it was unusual in that it was given an ‘Adults Only’ certificate – Pakistan’s first ever ‘X’ rated film!

Now I must admit, to not having seen the film and I may be doing it a huge diservice.

Has anyone out there seen it?  I’m guessing nobody has (other than a few brave Dracula Society members), but if you are that rare creature who has actually sat through the film, PLEASE reply to this post and give us all a review.

If it’s good, I’m going to buy it – oh, yes!

Looking forward to some replies…

Alan

Dracula: The Undead

posted by Dracula

There’s an upcoming “official sequel” to Dracula, called “Dracula: The Undead” by Dacre Stoker.  This sequel draws on the family’s notes.

It’s causing quite a stir in the publishing world and the rights to the film have been rapidly snapped up.  Shooting is expected to start in June.

It’s going to be quite a year for vampiric literature with a trilogy of vampire books from Guillermo Del Toro and Justin Cronin’s epic “The Passage, 2009“.
