Calling All Dracula Students!

posted by Dracula

I’ve just read a blog post that asks the following question…

“I’m stuck on the question of narrative format in “Dracula” by Bram Stoker (1898), wondering specifically why the author chose to use the epistulo-diaristic mode as opposed to a straightforward first- or third-person approach. It may be a convention of the period; and I’m reminded somewhat of the framed narrative approach Mary Shelley took in “Frankenstein” (1818).”

Answers anybody?

I’m guessing it’s a convention of the time.

I have to say that I think Dracula wouldn’t be half the success if it hadn’t been written in diary form.

I am a fan of Stoker’s famous novel, but I also don’t think he was that great a writer!

“What!” I hear you ask!

If you don’t believe me, read ‘Dracula’s Guest & Other Stories’ (short stories and an extra chapter from Dracula) and convince me that they are good stories!

Go on, I dare you!

I’m an English graduate and not scared to fight ;-)

Scots Stake Claim to Dracula

posted by Dracula

Residents of Whitby are spitting blood after owners of a Scottish castle staked a claim to be an inspiration for the Dracula story.

Slains Castle in Aberdeenshire (a ruined fortress which developers want to turn into £6m holiday apartments) is also claiming a Dracula connection.

It is claimed by some North of the border that Bram Stoker wrote part of his horror classic while staying at Crookit Lum Cottage, near Cruden Bay and may have used Slains Castle as a model for Dracula’s Castle in Transylvania.

Transylvania in Top 5 Holiday Destinations

posted by Dracula

USA Today is recommending Transylvania as one of the top 5 destinations to visit in Europe.

Good news for Dracula afficionados!

Here’s what Financiarul.ro has to say…

“Tourists are advised to start from the city of Brasov, full of history and medieval buildings, including churches and strongholds, to go by cabin to Tampa, wherefrom they have a splendid view of the city and of the mountains. The next location could be Bran Castle, known as the Castle of Dracula. It perfectly suits the Hollywood ideal of the castle of vampires, it has even been filmed for movies about Dracula.”

Why You MUST Visit Whitby

posted by Dracula

Here are a couple of videos I found about Whitby – very entertaining for different reasons!

The first video takes you through a tour of Bram Stoker’s Whitby and links the novel to places in the town.

The second video is an amusing look at the Whitby Goth Weekend (it really is quite insane!).

Two contrasting videos showing thet there really is something for everybody on the Yorkshire Coast!

Enjoy.

Christopher Lee – so many roles

posted by Dracula

Christopher Lee has clocked up more film credits than any other living actor in a 62-year career, several of which were made in Borehamwood.

I wish I’d had the opportunity to meet the man himself at the recent Elstree Film Evening.

Here’s why: Christopher Lee
