September 13, 2007 23:23 - Lifeboat station's big day
SHE came, she saw, she mesmerized the crowd and left people in Whitby hailing Friday 7 September 2007 as an historic day for the town.
The royal visit of the Duchess of Kent to officially open Whitby's new £1m lifeboat station was a great success, made all the more special by the glorious sunshine.
Around 300 invited guests were present at the prestigious ceremony and hundreds more people lined Pier Road to catch a glimpse of the Duchess, who arrived on Whitby's very own George and Mary Webb Lifeboat.

September 16, 2007 09:49 - Weird and Wonderful Whitby!
I've just come across a couple of great fiction books by Paul Magrs set in Whitby - you'll love these!
The first is called 'Never the Bride'. Brenda lives in Whitby and runs a B and B. She lives next door to her best friend Effie who owns a junk shop full of magical books. Together they get into a whole bunch of adventures, including going to a macabre beauty parlour called the Deadly Boutique, appearing on a psychic TV
programme, assisting in helping aliens to flee their home, and get involved in a mystery as to some missing Christmas Elves. And just who is Mr Alucard?
The second book is 'Something Borrowed' Want to know what it's about? Right, here goes...
There's sinister goings-on in Whitby which is odd as it's nearly always quiet. Goomba (an elemental god from another dimension) is causing havoc and on the beach you'll meet Jessie the zombie 'womanzee' (half-woman, half-chimpanzee). Hell, even Dracula appears (again!). Brenda's adventures in this seaside resort are hilarious. This is a great read and is the second book in the series. If you love Whitby, Dracula (or amorous ghoul hunting, youthful professors of Icelandic history, bamboo wickerwork gods from the dawn of time, etc, etc), then this book is for you!

September 17, 2007 16:43 - Safe Halloween Costume Ideas
With Halloween coming up soon, now is the time to start preparing for the big day...Maybe you have always wanted to be Spider Man, or a Pokemon, or maybe still, you have always wanted to sling Wonder Woman’s lasso. Whatever crazy alter ego you may have lined up for this Halloween make sure of one thing: It’s a safe Halloween costume idea.
A few pointers when thinking about your costume and coming up with safe Halloween costume ideas are these. First, make sure that the costume does not drag on the ground. It would be easy to trip or have someone step on a cape or gown causing an accident. Secondly, make sure that if a mask is worn that the eyeholes are large enough to allow for clear vision. Third, when thinking about safe Halloween costume ideas keep in mind what requirements are needed to stay safe: clear vision, being able to walk easily without tripping on garments, and making sure that there is adequate ventilation in order to breathe within the costume. These are just a few safe Halloween costume ideas.
Okay, so now you have your safe Halloween costume idea. Great! Now comes the time to consider what you should do with that idea. Here are a few things you may want to keep in mind while constructing or going out to buy, a safe Halloween costume.
1. Make sure you can be seen. One safe Halloween costume idea is to put reflective tape on the costume. For example: if your daughter wants to go as a pretty princess, make a tiara that reflects light our use a sash with stars cut out of reflective tape.
2. Choose a costume that is flame retardant. Many people have pumpkins with candles stuffed inside.
3. If using face paint make sure it is nontoxic and hypoallergenic.
4. If you just have to have that super long sword or axe, make sure it is made of a flexible material. Another safe Halloween costume idea is to make these items out of foam and wrap them in tape. This will make them stiff yet they will bend if you should fall on it.
So have fun this Halloween season. Just remember that when designing your costumes that you use some of the safe Halloween costume ideas. It will help ensure that you and your family stay safe and have a wonderful time.
Carl Soothers loves Halloween, it is favorite holiday! Carl recently launched a new site that allows you to find local Halloween Parties across the United States. There is some cool technology behind the site (mashup of Web 2.0 APIs) - but all that matters is that it is cool and fun: http://www.halloweenmashup.com/

September 20, 2007 20:42 - End confirmed for Musicport
Musicport World Music Festival 2007 will be the last in Whitby. Bridlington will take over the host venue next year.
Musicport say they have outgrown the 1,000 capacity Pavilion in Whitby and need to sell more tickets to be able to survive.
What do you think? It will certainly be a massive blow to the town's economy. There will still be some concerts in Whitby but not on the same scale as before.
Let me know what you think. Have you been to the festival before? Get in touch via the Ask Dracula contact form and let me know your views on the move. What are you memories of the Musicport Festival? Will you still attend the festival in Bridlington?
Is it a case of "the day, the music died"?

An ancient naval battle which took the lives of many local men and forced hundreds in Whitby to evacuate is to be brought back to life with a shadow puppet show.
Wet and Windy productions is presenting Ye Olde Whitby Pirate Tales, which tells of the most remarkable ship duel of the American Revolution between the US ship, The Bonne Homme Richard, captained by American naval hero John Paul Jones and HMS Seraphis off Flamborough Head on 23 September 1779.

September 24, 2007 22:08 - Piece of town's history washes up Down Under
A 150-year-old ship wreck has been found off the coast of Australia – and it turns out it was originally built in Whitby.
A man walking on a beach at the town of Yaroomba, near Queensland, came across a large section of hardwood ribbing, believed to belong to the Kirkdale, which was lost off the coast in 1862.
The boat was originally designed as a wood carvel brig in Whitby in 1856 and the discovery was spotted by ex-pat Robert Jefferson, who was born in Whitby but moved to Australia 40 years ago.

September 25, 2007 22:03 - Dracula's Ball on Halloween!!!
Thought this might be of interest for those of you who prefer their entertainment on the dark side!
The next Dracula's Ball event takes place on Halloween: Wednesday, October 31st, 2007, from 9pm-2am. Once in a very blue moon (about every seven years) Halloween happens to fall on a Wednesday night. When this happens, our venerable Dracula's Ball event runs into the only big bad wolf that's been stalking the forest for even longer: Nocturne Wednesdays. Every week for over eleven years, Nocturne has kept Philadelphia's alternative
underground music scene pumping with new life. Don't miss this fantastic convergence of Dracula's Ball and Nocturne Wednesday - it'll be many years before it happens again!
The venue for Dracula's Ball will once again be Shampoo Nightclub, located at 7th & Willow Streets in Philadelphia.
