July 3, 2007 09:08 - The Whitby Conclave: occultists, ex-hippies and pothead pixies!

I've just read a fascinating article about magical events in Whitby back in 1979. The article, by Sarah Whittaker, looks at the Whitby Conclave. Here's a taster:

...during the Summer of 1979, at a house in Cliff Street, along with a few local pubs, no doubt, there occurred what has since become known as the Whitby Conclave. This three storey house overlooking the harbour, which is said to be the house in which Bram Stoker wrote Dracula, was the abode of one Graham Fenn-Edwards, a ritual magician and sculptor, who had moved to Whitby the year before. As is the tradition with the likes of occult communities, visiting magi descend upon any suitable lounge floor to crash for a few days, while escaping from the rigours of a world largely unsympathetic to their various models of reality.

The article goes on to talk about experimental rituals at Boggle Hole and the beginnings of Chaos Magic.

It might be off the beaten-track, but Whitby never fails to impress!

July 7, 2007 00:06 - Fang-tastic find

A RARE first edition of a classic horror story which sparked countless films and built a legend around a seaside town has been unearthed.

The 1897 copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula was found during a house clearance in Great Smeaton, near Northallerton.

It will go under the hammer later this month and is expected to fetch upwards of £4,000. Northallerton Auctions, which is handling the sale, has already recorded interest from around the country.

July 7, 2007 16:59 - Dracula Theme Park for Whitby?

I've just read an interesting account (from the Brisbane Times) about a visit to Dickens World, a $150 million theme park based on the life and times of Charles Dickens in London.

Got me thinking whether a Dracula World would work in Whitby. I'm guessing not but what do you think?

If you've got any thoughts, please get in touch via the Dracula-in-Whitby website and I'll add your views to the site.

Would it be good for the tourist trade? Would it be 'tacky'? Hmm...

July 11, 2007 23:23 - Dracula fans have a ball

FANGS, capes, glamour but not mirrors were on show at The Met in Whitby as vampires swarmed into town for their annual get together.

Whitby Dracula Society’s Summer Ball 2007 – Hollywood Vampires was a fantastic, well attended event despite the recent severe weather warnings and floods.

July 15, 2007 11:16 - A castle fit for Dracula -- yours for $85 million

Bran Castle in Romania has no direct tie to Vlad the Impaler, but the mythic reputation of the medieval manor is drawing attention to its sale.

Bran Castle, which cleaves to a steep cliff that towers above a medieval village in Romania, is up for sale for a bloodcurdling $85 million.

Why? Castles don't normally fetch such top dollars these days, but a curious modern mythology has turned this property into a Dracula draw.
