June 1, 2007 13:45 - Classic Hammer Screenings

It's certainly a great time for Dracula fans with Hammer Films really making a comeback in the UK!

The 6th Fantastic Films Weekend takes place between 15-17 June at the National Media Museum in Bradford. The festival will be screening new remastered prints of Hammer horror classics Countess Dracula and Twins of Evil. Hammer fans will be delighted to learn that Twins of Evil director John Hough, will be at the event and will be conducting a screen talk and Q&A on 16th.

The 2nd Elstree Film Festival takes place at the Reel Cinema, Borehamwood between 25-29 June. The festival opens with a gala screening of Hammer's comedy On the Buses, and there will be a Hammer Fright Night on 28th, with screenings of Scars of Dracula and Devil Rides Out. A number of special guests have been confirmed including former Hammer chairman Roy Skeggs, star of Scars of Dracula - Jenny Hanley, and Hammer historian Wayne Kinsey.

The BFI have also announced plans for a tribute to former Hammer director Freddie Francis on 23 July in London. Freddie's Hammer film Paranoaic will be part of the tribute.

Officials have proudly raised Whitby's Blue Flag which hails its beach among the best in the country.

Earlier this year Whitby and District’s Tourism Association, councillors and residents feared Whitby might not be awarded its Blue Flag due to delays in the construction of the centre which boasts new modern facilities for beach users.

June 23, 2007 09:40 - Salt in the Blood

Salt in the Blood (1995) is a ghost story based on the legend of a fatal quarrel between two Norwegian sailors over who was the better dancer. Four traditional seas shanties form the backbone of the music, and its text draws from fragments of ships' log books, the Beaufort Scale, and from chapter 7 of Dracula using text from both the Dailygraph report and the log of the Demeter.

This classical CD by the English classical composer Judith Bingham (b.1952), was released in March 2007 by Naxos. The CD's reference number is 8.570346.

June 23, 2007 21:49 - Hammer 'Dracula' Restored to full 'Gory Glory'!

The Hammer Horror version of 'Dracula' has been restored in its full 'gory glory' and was recently screened at the Cannes Film Festival. According to researchers at the British Film Institute, certain scenes which featured 'groans, hammer blows with wooden stakes and blood' were cut from the original by squeamish 1950s censors. We can only hope that the missing footage will soon be available on DVD for us all to enjoy!
