May 4, 2007 21:07 - Dalby Forest Gigs

As a season ticket-holder for Dalby Forest on the Yorkshire Moors, I was interested to hear about the great bands lined up to play amongst the trees this Summer!

If you're visiting Whitby in June, this could make a nice diversion for an evening (Dalby Forest is only about 40 minutes away).

The UK's most successful dance band, M People, are just one of the acts playing in the 8,600 acre Dalby Forest, near Pickering, North Yorkshire this summer.

Here's the full line-up:

  • James Morrison - 22nd June

  • Travis - 23rd June

  • M People - 24th June

Tickets cost £25.50 and are available by telephoning 01842 814612 or direct from the new Dalby Forest Visitor Centre. Follow the link below for online booking details.

Music AND nature - sounds great!

May 12, 2007 23:03 - Don't be scared - it's Hammer time!

LONDON, May 10, 2007 - A European consortium, headed by Dutch based Cyrte Investments BV, has acquired the legendary UK based Hammer Film Productions Limited, including its 295 title library for an undisclosed sum. The new management team is headed by Simon Oakesand Marc Schipper, formerly of Liberty Global Inc.

Hammer will return to film and television production after more than 30 years with an active development programme designed to emulate the best traditions of Hammer. The new management plans to aggressively reinvigorate the Hammer brand for a new generation of horror-lovers utilizing web and mobile technologies, whilst
retaining Hammer's significant heritage.

Hammer is best known for its gothic horror productions in the '50s and '60s, when it was the most innovative producer in the horror genre, enjoying global box-office success, and making the Hammer brand synonymous with horror. Hammer was responsible for the classic movie series of Dracula, Frankenstein, and Quatermass, forever
imprinting its "Hammer House of Horror" slogan into the English language.

A new version of the website is being uploaded and there is a form to enter your details to be kept up-to-date with this exciting development.

May 16, 2007 18:09 - Turk leaves for a tour of Europe

The Grand Turk has left Whitby on what could be its last summer tour from the town.

The huge ship is currently in Kent. When it leaves UK shores it will spend the next couple of months visiting Belgium, Holland and Ireland before finally returning to Whitby.

The Turk is actually up for sale (if you're interested in buying!) and so this, sadly, could be the last time that the ship is seen in Whitby.

The Turks Captain (Ian Macdougal) said he was still hopeful that the ship could remain in Whitby for ever if a buyer came forward.

What are you waiting for...!!!

May 17, 2007 20:34 - Dracula's Ball

If you're in the US, the next Dracula's Ball is a few days away, and NOW is the time to coordinate with your friends, get your tickets, and decide what you're going to wear. It's been almost four months since the last Ball and now is the time to paint the town red.

(Also, don't forget this year's Wave Gothic Treffen event in Germany, which is on Memorial Day weekend).

Anyway, the next Dracula's Ball event will be THIS Saturday, May 19th, from 9pm-2am. The venue will once again be Shampoo Nightclub, located at 7th & Willow Streets in Philadelphia. Parking is free but the lot fills up very quickly. The musical performers are:

  • LIFE CRIED: Life Cried combines dark melodies and high club appeal, while injecting a soul, atmosphere and style into their music by creating compositions with depth and charisma. The debut album is convincing from the first to last track by using well chosen samples and clear, easy recognizable melodies as well as driving beats. STAGE TIME - 10:35PM

  • HATE IN THE BOX: The band describes itself as "the mutant love child of Jack Off Jill, SwitchBlade Symphony and Rob Zombie, with an Alice in Wonderland twist." STAGE TIME - 12:05AM

The DJs for this event will be Ian Fford (NYC), Alexx Reed (frontman of ThouShaltNot) and Steven Archer (DC -- you may know his band, Ego Likeness).

As always, there will be vendors (some old, some new), door prizes, candy, people to meet, and plenty to look at.

As always, all ages are welcome at the Dracula's Ball. You must be 21+ w/proper, valid photo ID to drink alcohol. Photo cameras are allowed at the Ball; video cameras are not.

***Tickets are $14 in advance and $16 at the door. There will definitely be tickets available at the door. You can get tickets now through Ticketmaster. You can also get them in person at Digital Ferret CDs (215-925-9259). ***

Remember that, besides being cheaper, advance tickets will get you through the door more quickly in the advance ticket holder line.

May 25, 2007 09:15 - A Picnic on the Heath...with Dracula!

The Dracula Society will be holding its Summer Meeting (A Picnic on the Heath) on Saturday 16th June 2007, so now is the time to join if you are a fan of the notorious Count and all things Gothic (see More Info at the end of this post).

Place: Turpin's Bar, upstairs at the Spaniard's Inn, Spaniard's Road, Hampstead, London, NW3 7JJ. Guest interview at 5.30pm, followed by buffet supper from 7.00pm.

The picnic (see below) will be followed by an interview with special guest Renee Glynne. Renee's career as a 'continuity girl' and script supervisor spans an incredible 60 years. She began in the scenario department at Welwyn Studios and Pinewood, and was Production Secretary on Caesar and Cleopatra (1945) and Brief Encounter (1946) at Denham Studios. Renee's career is of particular interest to Dracula fans because of her long association with Hammer Films, having worked alongside such renowned directors as Val Guest, Terence Fisher and Seth Holt, and with such stars as Brian Donlevy, Peter Cushing and Bette Davis.

The charge for this event, including buffet supper, will be £10 per person. You need to be a member of The Dracula Society to attend (or be invited by a member).

If you join the Society and wish to attend their customary light picnic on the heath (weather permitting), they will set off from Ye Olde White Bear, Well Road, Hampstead, promptly at 2.00pm.

Sounds like a great day for all Dracula officianados! Why not join the Society? Click on More Info for details.
