April 2, 2007 13:04 - Dalby Forest: back to nature!

Couldn't resist writing about what I did this morning! No wait, don't leave yet!

I've just got back from an early 5/6 mile jog around Dalby Forest and it was fantastic: deer, squirrels, Canadian geese - more wildlife than you can shake a stick at!

Dalby Forest is on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors and about a half hour drive from Whitby. At this time of the year, the forest is shaking off its Winter mantle and is beginning to rejuvenate. The hordes of tourists haven't started arriving yet, especially if you visit the forest early morning.

Did I have a good run or what? Bright sunshine, crisp air, glorious views across the moors towards the Hole of Horcum and Fylingdales, and not a single person in sight.

To round it all off, breakfast on the edge of a lake, taking care to fend off the geese and ducks desperate to get at the bread and coffee!

If you're planning a visit to Yorkshire in the near-future, I suggest you make a visit to Dalby and be prepared to spend a whole day (it costs £7 - the Forestry Commission are trying to claw back some money after spending millions on a state-of-the-art visitors' centre!). Yours truly has a yearly pass and fully intends to get his money's worth!

Follow the link for more information. I'm going to create a page for the Dracula-in-Whitby website highlighting things-to-do, activities, concerts and sporting events taking place in the forest.

Now I need a rest!

April 6, 2007 10:01 - Full steam ahead for rail link to coast after 42 years!

It has taken more than 40 years, but the Golden Age of Steam returned to Whitby as the North
Yorkshire Moors Railway
fulfilled its dream of running all the way to the coast again.

It reopens to passengers on Good Friday, with the first service out of Pickering at 8.45am.

General manager Philip Benham said: "We believe the new service will not only be an important attraction in its own right, but will also help the expansion of tourism in both Whitby and the North York Moors National Park."

April 10, 2007 14:28 - Goth Church Service!

The Rev Marcus Ramshaw will be taking a church service for Goths in Whitby later this month.

So what?

Well, the Rev is a Goth himself and the service throws traditional hymns out of the window and brings in music by Depeche Mode and Sisters of Mercy!

The candlelight service will be held at St Mary's Church in Whitby and will contain secular and biblical readings.

The Rev has taken similar services before in Cambridgeshire and, by all accounts, seems to be looking forward to preaching to several thousand Goths at the Whitby Gothic Weekend Festival

April 28, 2007 21:33 - Goth Weekend

Just got back from Whitby and the start of the Goth Weekend. The town looks amazing: loads of gothic characters, of all ages, dressed in black, frilly, Victoriana! In fact, if you were in ordinary clothing, you looked decidedly under-dressed!

Oh, we also got accosted by Darth Vader and several Storm Troopers - a bit of an unusual site in rural Yorkshire, I can tell you!

The Dracula Drop bungee jump into the harbour was well under way and crazy people were risking life and limb to raise cash for the RNLI (a worthy cause).

There's a real party mood about the place and rumour has it that there's about 60,000 visitors descending on the town this weekend - great for business!

Once I'd had my fill of fish and chips from the Magpie Cafe, it was time to ascend the 199 Steps and pay a visit to St.Marys Church with it's unique family stalls and ancient atmosphere. The graveyard was full of Gothic characters - looked like a film set! I watched a video in the church about the history of Whitby and enjoyed the tranquility.

Back down the steps to Whitby and a quick haul up the Khyber Pass to West Cliff where I hunted for a plaque on a seat with an inscription dedicated to Bram Stoker and the Dracula Society (of which I'm a member). After checking about 100 seats I finally found it!

I'm sure there's going to be some serious partying and music tonight in the town. Most hotels and B&Bs seem full up and this can only be good news for Whitby. The Ghost Walk will, no doubt, be extremely popular.

If you haven't been before, you still have time tomorrow (Sunday) - the weather is going to be great!

See you there!
