I look forward to hearing from you.

Alan

March 16, 2007 15:27 - Whitby Gothic Weekend

If you haven't been to the Whitby Gothic Weekend before then you are missing out on the experience of a lifetime. The Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby plays host to Goth bands, events and drinking!

The first of this year's weekends will be Friday 27th - Saturday 28th April (the second weekend is Friday 26th - Saturday 27th October).

You can visit the Whitby Gothic Weekend website for full details, but bands lined up to play include:

  • The Last Dance

  • Soho Dolls

  • Dust

  • Razorblade Kisses

  • Cruxshadows

  • Bella Morte

  • Machinegun Symphony

  • Rome Burns

Also, on Sunday 29th April, you can go to the SEXY SUNDAY Goth Industrial Alternative night at the end of the Whitby Gothic Weekend (if you have the inclination!). If you're in Whitby that weekend, you can't miss it (8pm til 1.30am).

What! You want more? How about Manic Monday on the 30th April. This is a theme-night. Go on, ask me what the theme is. Please ask! Okay, it's Big Baby Night: Blue n Bouncy or Pink N fluffy. Well, you did ask!

Quite a place, Whitby, and it's still not the Summer!

March 26, 2007 21:43 - Dracula, with a foreword by Elizabeth Kostova

I've just finished reading a newish copy of 'Dracula' from Little Brown Publishers. Although there are no illustrations in this edition, I felt it was worth purchasing because of the foreword by the author of The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova.

This foreword has many enlightened and interesting 'facts' about the novel:

When Dr. Seward summons Van Helsing, a professor of medicine 'who knows as much about obscure diseases as anyone in the world', to attend on the strange case of Lucy Westenra, Stoker is invoking a powerful tradition of science (and before that, alchemy) that reaches back to the Middle Ages.

I enjoyed reading this book and if you haven't yet read this classic story, you could do a lot worse than buy this edition.

March 27, 2007 08:49 - Dracula Drop Bungee Jump

Do you fancy bungee jumping into Whitby harbour? What? You do! The Dracula Drop sounds just up your street then.

The RNLI are hoping to raise money for their life-saving organization. Over the years, the Whitby RNLI has saved many lives, so please support this event.

The event takes place on Saturday 28th April during Whitby Goth Weekend when the town will be bustling with colourful characters (well, gothic black!).

You can bungee for free if you pledge to raise at least £100 to help the RNLI continue to save lives at sea.

The first £20 is payable as a deposit to secure your jump and the lifeboat service ask that you bring at least another £80 with you to the event - cheques can be post-dated for one month to allow you time to collect in your outstanding sponsorship.

The drop could raise up to £10,000!

UK Bungee Club will be bringing a crane to jump from, extending to 160 feet above the harbour at Whitby bandstand in Pier Road.

To take part in the Dracula Drop on Saturday 28 April, please contact RNLI Catherine Kaye on 0161 787 8779 or email catherine_kaye@rnli.org.uk
